Bill Gross, the entrepreneur behind more than 175 startups, has launched Idealab.ai. The free platform gives away 1.2 million AI-generated business ideas, along with tools to study and test them. Here is what it offers, what is free, and what it means for freelancers and students.
What happened
On Monday, October 19, 2026, Bill Gross announced Idealab.ai from Pasadena, California. Gross founded the tech incubator Idealab in 1996. Since then, his companies have launched more than 175 businesses, including GoTo.com and Citysearch.
Now he is giving away his idea-finding method as a free AI platform. Anyone can open the site, search the ideas, and start testing them. His stated goal is a big one: help create one million new businesses and 100 million new jobs around the world.
What is inside Idealab.ai
The headline number is 1.2 million. That is how many business ideas the platform offers at launch, and all of them are free to search and view.
Each idea comes with a short brief. The brief lists the possible customers, the competitors, the first steps to try, and the reasons the idea could fail. You can filter ideas by field, location, market size, money needed, team size, and level of automation. You can also save the ideas you like for later.

The platform has a “Labs” section. Labs lets you take an idea further and test it in a practical way instead of only reading about it. There is also a “Periodic Table of Business Functions.” It lists 118 jobs and roles needed to run a company, from the first idea to full growth.
A patent search is built in too. One view shows nearly 10,000 Caltech patents and 21,000 patents from 3M. This helps founders check what technology already exists before they build.
How the AI builds the ideas
Gross says the system studied more than 17 million sources. These include news articles, research papers, patents, company filings, and community discussions.
The AI then applies 31 methods that Gross has used for 30 years to spot new opportunities. It mixes three things: problems people face, new technologies, and big market or cultural shifts. Each idea gets a score based on how urgent the need is, how ready the technology is, and how strong the market looks.
Gross credits recent AI progress for making the project possible. “Six months ago, this wouldn’t have worked,” he said. He added: “With Idealab, I could do 10 companies at once; now, I could do 10,000 at once.”
What is free and what comes later
Everything on the site is free at launch. That includes the idea search, the briefs, the filters, saving ideas, and the Labs section.
Later versions will add more. You will be able to apply for funding and find collaborators through the platform. Gross wants to connect founders with $100 million in possible funding.
The first partner is Cloudflare. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince has promised $100,000 in credits to each startup started through the platform. Before the launch, Gross also removed about 100,000 ideas that could be harmful.
What makes it different
Other idea websites only list ideas. Idealab.ai adds the brief, the filters, and the Labs section. The brief forces you to think about customers and risks before you spend money. The filters help you skip ideas that do not fit your budget or skills. The patent search adds another layer. You can check if a company already owns the technology you want to use. Together, these tools turn a simple idea list into a research tool for real founders.
Why it matters for freelancers and students
For students and freelancers, the value is simple. You get free, organized business ideas matched to your skills.

You can enter your skills or work experience and find ideas that fit you. If you have little money, you can filter for ideas that need low capital. The briefs show you the competitors and the first steps, so you do not start blind.
If you dream of a side hustle or a small online business, this is a free starting point for research. Read our guides on making money with AI as a student and work from home business opportunities to plan your next step.
A fair warning
Ideas are only the first step. Experts point out that an idea list does not build a company for you. You still need to test the idea, talk to real customers, and do the hard work. No score on the site can promise success.
Some also worry that new businesses may not make up for the jobs AI takes away. That debate is not settled. Use Idealab.ai as a research tool, not as a magic fix.
How to try it
Go to idealab.ai and start searching. No payment is needed. Pick a field you know, set your budget filter, and read a few briefs. Then use the Labs section to test the idea you like most.
