Anthropic has launched a new AI agent called Claude Duet. It does not wait for your questions. It comes to you with the work that needs your attention.
Duet sends you a short morning briefing. It checks your apps in the background. It asks for your approval before it sends a message, pays a bill, or signs anything.
Right now it is a research preview. It is open only through a waitlist for Claude Pro and Max users in the United States.
What happened
On October 21, 2026, Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet. The company calls it a proactive agent. This means it acts on its own, before you ask.
Anthropic says it built Duet around Claude Opus 5.5. This is Anthropic’s newest and strongest model. The company built the tool for professionals and small business owners. These are people with more work than they can track.
Claude Duet is the third big proactive agent this year. OpenAI has Dots, and Meta has Muse. Now Anthropic has entered the same race.
What Claude Duet does
Most AI chatbots wait for your prompt. Duet works the other way. Here is what it does each day.
Each morning it sends you a short brief. The brief covers the most important items from your connected apps. This can include your email and your calendar.
During the day it keeps an eye on your apps. It checks them every few hours. It sends you a message only when something needs you. Anthropic says it does not check nonstop. Nonstop checks would use up your plan limits too fast.
You can also hand it work by text or voice. All talks happen in one ongoing thread. You can ask it to:
- Schedule meetings and draft email replies
- Find unpaid invoices and draft payment reminders
- Build dashboards, reports, and financial forecasts
- Build small web apps and prototypes
- Prepare contracts for you to send
It runs on its own cloud computer. This computer has its own browser. So Duet keeps working even when your phone or laptop is off. It sends you a notification when a task is done or when it needs your review.

How it connects to your tools
Claude Duet works with your Claude account. It uses your memory, your skills, and your connected apps. It can even search your past talks. So you do not need to repeat yourself.
It can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins from the Claude Marketplace. These include Gmail, Slack, Google Calendar, and Google Drive. They also include QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, HubSpot, Shopify, LinkedIn, and DocuSign.
That is the part small business owners will care about most. You can ask Duet to check QuickBooks or Stripe for unpaid bills. It will draft the reminder for you. You can ask it to prepare payroll in Gusto. You can ask it to set up a Shopify store.
There is also a Tasks tab. It lets you follow ongoing work. You can see which tasks need your attention. Only you can mark a task as done.
Safety: it asks before it acts
Duet reads, drafts, and prepares work on its own. But before it sends a message, it shows you the full draft. It waits for your approval.
The same rule applies to money. Before it makes a payment, it asks you first. Before it signs a document or deletes anything, it asks you first.
Some actions are blocked forever. Trading stocks is not allowed, even with your approval. Moving money between accounts is not allowed either.
Duet also protects your private data. It never sees your passwords or login keys. A special safety system checks every message. It guards against leaks of credit card numbers and ID details. It blocks harmful tricks hidden inside web pages.

Price and who can use it
Claude Duet is a research preview, not a final product. Access still works through a waitlist. Anthropic sends invites in waves.
Right now only Pro and Max subscribers in the United States can join the waitlist. However, Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. Anthropic says it plans to add them later.
You can use Duet in three ways. There is a standalone app for iOS. There is a standalone app for Android. You can also use it on the web at claude.ai.
There is no extra charge during the preview. Duet is part of your Pro or Max plan. But it shares your plan’s usage limits. Its background checks count toward those limits. So a Duet that watches your inbox all day may use up your limits faster.
The preview is not perfect yet
Anthropic is honest about the rough edges. Since this is a research preview, Duet may misread a message thread. It may judge the wrong task as urgent. Messages that arrive between check-ins may also slip past it.
It is also weak at personal errands. Booking a flight or buying a gift is not its strength. And right now you cannot see its browser while it works.
This is normal for a preview. As a result, Anthropic will use early user feedback to improve the agent.
Why this matters for freelancers and students
This launch shows where AI is going. For example, agents are changing from tools you open to helpers that come to you.
If you are a freelancer, think of the daily busywork. Chasing unpaid invoices. Drafting replies to clients. Scheduling calls. Preparing simple contracts. Duet can draft all of this in the background. You just review and approve.
If you are a student, think of your week. Assignment deadlines across email and calendar. Group project meetings. Draft replies to teachers. A morning brief could keep all of this in one place. Duet can also help you build small web projects for your portfolio.
There is a catch. It is US-only for now, and it needs a paid Pro or Max plan. But the pattern is clear. Proactive agents are becoming normal. OpenAI’s Dots does background work for subscribers. Meta’s Muse works across your apps too. Anthropic’s Duet joins them with one big strength: more than 6,000 app connectors and a strong approval-first design.
If you do client work, start learning how to work with an agent now. Learn to direct these tools. You will finish work faster than people who type every prompt by hand.
Final words
Claude Duet is early. It is a preview with a waitlist and real limits. But it points at a simple future. Your AI helper will watch your work, flag what matters, and ask before it acts.
Anthropic built it for busy owners. Soon it may reach teams, students, and the rest of the world. When it does, the daily question will change from “what should I ask AI today” to “what did AI already handle for me.”
