Summary
Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026. It is the first model in the new Gemini 4 series. Tests show it beats top models from OpenAI and Anthropic on 13 of 18 benchmarks.
What Happened
Google has launched a new flagship AI model called Gemini 4 Argon. The company calls it the most powerful model it has ever built. It is the first release in the Gemini 4 series.
The news came on September 30, 2026, the last day of the third quarter. Google had planned to release a model called Gemini 3.5 Pro in June. However, that model never came out. Instead, Google jumped straight to Gemini 4.
Argon is built for long, complex tasks. For example, it can handle software coding, legal work, finance tasks, and cyber defense. Google says it works best on jobs that need many steps and careful thinking.
KEY DETAILS: GEMINI 4 ARGON BENCHMARKS
Benchmarks are tests that compare AI models. Gemini 4 Argon tops 13 of 18 major benchmarks. It beats GPT-6 Astra from OpenAI and Claude Opus 5.5 from Anthropic on most of them.
On DeepSWE v1.1, a test for long coding projects, Argon scored 77.9%. Claude Opus 5.5 scored 74.2%. GPT-6 Astra scored 74.1%.
On Harvey’s Legal Agent Benchmark, Argon scored 19.6%. Astra scored only 5.4% on the same test.
On the Vals Index, which covers finance, coding, legal, and tax work, Argon scored 68.9%.
But Argon does not win everywhere. GPT-6 Astra still leads on FrontierSWE v2 and OSWorld-2.0. Claude Opus 5.5 leads on Terminal-bench 4.0 and PostTrainBench. Both models are tied at 68% on CWE-bench v1.
One more detail stands out. On one honesty test, Argon gave wrong facts 15% of the time. Astra gave wrong facts 51% of the time. As a result, Argon may be more trustworthy when you need correct answers.

Key Details: The Price
Google set a low price for developers. Argon costs $2 per million input tokens. It costs $10 per million output tokens. Also, cached input is 95% cheaper.
That price is about one-fifth of what GPT-6 Astra costs. The price will double after the intro period ends. Still, even the full price would be lower than the top OpenAI model.
Google also raised the output limit from 64,000 tokens to 1 million tokens. In simple words, the model can now write very long answers. One million tokens can cover hundreds of pages in a single reply.
Key Details: Who Gets It First
You cannot use Gemini 4 Argon yet. Google is releasing it slowly and carefully.
First, it goes to trusted cyber defenders through Google’s Fairwind Program. It is also going through early access with the US government.
After that, paid API customers get it. Then Google AI Ultra subscribers get it. The company has not shared dates for these steps.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said, “We’re going to make it available as soon as we can and as safely as we can.”
Google has also added safety steps before the wider release. These steps help block cyberattacks and other misuse.
Google Is Already Using It Inside
Thousands of people at Google have used Argon for weeks. The results are strong.
A team of Argon agents freed more than 300 TiB of memory across Google’s data centers. Total savings could reach up to 1 PiB.
The agents also moved over 800,000 lines of code from C/C++ to Rust. This includes code from the Fuchsia Zircon kernel.
In one video tool called libgav1, Argon replaced 32,000 lines of code. The new version runs 2.7 times faster.

WHY GEMINI 4 ARGON MATTERS FOR STUDENTS
If you use AI to study, this news is good for you. Gemini 4 Argon is smarter and cheaper than many current models. When it reaches the Gemini app, students may get better answers for less money.
The 1-million-token output limit can help with long study tasks. You could ask for a full chapter summary or a long research draft in one go. The model is also less likely to give wrong facts than Astra, based on the test above.
But wait for the real release. Right now, you cannot try Argon yourself. Tests are run by Google and other companies, not by everyday users. So real-world results may look different.
Why It Matters for Freelancers
If you build apps, bots, or tools for clients, the low API price is the big news. At $2 and $10 per million tokens, you can run AI tasks at a much lower cost. That means higher profit on every project.
Better coding scores matter too. Argon beat Astra on DeepSWE, a test for long coding projects. If you use AI to write or fix code, this model could save you hours of work.
If you do writing, marketing, or research work, the legal and finance benchmark wins show the model handles skilled work well. That could make it useful for reports, plans, and client documents.
The safest move is to learn the skills now. Keep building with current models like Gemini 3.5 or ChatGPT. When Argon arrives, you will be ready to switch and get the benefits fast.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WITH GEMINI 4 ARGON
The next step is the wider release. Watch for news about paid API access and Google AI Ultra subscribers. If you are on our blog, check our Gemini vs ChatGPT comparison to see how the current models rank for students. You can also read our free AI tools guide to try current free options today.
The AI race is moving fast. Google now sits close to the top with OpenAI and Anthropic. However, the real test will come when everyday users try Argon. That day is coming soon.
